The number of people receiving the 'Compostela' or pilgrim certificate from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela has risen from 5,000 in 1990 to nearly 280,000 in 2016.

Pilgrim numbers on Norway's St Olav's Ways have grown by 30% a year. If this trend continues, the numbers will rise to more than 10,000 by 2025.
